Our Leaders' Legacy

Although Presidents Day is in February, any time of year is a good time to recognize the contributions of our nation’s leaders. This month marks a somber anniversary for one—it’s been 150 years since our country’s 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, was assassinated. National Geographic magazine’s April cover story takes a look back at Lincoln’s life and legacy along the route of his funeral train. Follow along in maps and pictures. See some surprising ways the Great Emancipator has been portrayed in pop culture. Learn more about how Lincoln and the other presidents were immortalized on Mount Rushmore. Explore a gallery of presidential monuments that didn’t quite make the cut—then take a walk around the monuments that did. Get a more intimate look at the recent presidents’ lives, and study up on presidential fun facts.
