Acclaimed Economist Decides That He Doesn't Know What He's Talking about, Will Now to Teach about Korean TV Instead

Posted: 13 Jul 2015 04:00 AM PDT

Dr. Uwe E. Reinhardt of Princeton University is an expert on the economics of health care. He's a widely-sought speaker on the topic and has published regularly in the New York Times to an audience of millions.

By his own admission, he has no idea what he's talking about. So Dr. Reinhardt has decided to instead teach about Korean television dramas, of which he has watched many:

After the near‐collapse of the world’s financial system has shown that we economists really do not know how the world works, I am much too embarrassed to teach economics anymore, which I have done for many years. I will teach Modern Korean Drama instead.

Although I have never been to Korea, I have watched Korean drama on a daily basis for over six years now. Therefore I can justly consider myself an expert in that subject.

Inevitably, some of aspects of his former profession are creeping into his current one. He describes how Korean dramas depict hospitals:

Finally, every good Korean drama has many scenes at super clean hospitals with good‐looking doctors and nurses. Koreans love their hospitals and seem to run to them whenever they have a cold or a headache or are lovesick or simply feel “stress.”

To an economist like me, this fondness for hospitals is surprising, because hospitals are expensive in Korea and much of the bill is not covered by Korea’s National Health Insurance system. Price‐elasticity of demand does not seem to work in Korean drama.

This is all most likely a joke, as Dr. Reinhardt appears to still be employed by Princeton University as a professor of economics.

The 11 Greatest Accountants in Science Fiction and Fantasy

Posted: 13 Jul 2015 02:00 AM PDT

(Image: Fox)

In the universe of The Tick, Arthur is a pudgy and socially awkward accountant who leaves that line of work to become a superhero. Or at least a sidekick. His moth suit, which permits him to glide through the air, gives him the pretext to become one. His superhero name is . . . Arthur.

He's still a good accountant. He loses his job at the firm only because he won't dress in business attire. He's 1 of 11 notably successful accountants in science fiction and fantasy, including The Bursar from the Discworld universe, Leland Owlsley from Dardevil, and Petyr Baelish from Game of Thrones. You can read about all of them at Tor.

Here's What Sterling Archer Thinks About Comic-Con

Posted: 13 Jul 2015 01:00 AM PDT

Archer is a big fan of drinking, womanizing and doing “spy stuff”, pretty much exactly in that order.

However, Archer isn’t a fan of Comic-Con, and he has no problem telling poor Pam how stupid it is to go see panels and movie sneak peeks. In the process that mean drunk crushes Pam's dream of cosplaying as Immortan Joe...

So why does the Duchess of the Danger Zone have such a problem with all the Comic-Con geekery? Who gives a crap, he's a cartoon! (Video contains NSFW-ish language)

The Strangest Ice Cream Flavor From Every State

Posted: 13 Jul 2015 12:00 AM PDT

Looking for a cool way to cool down on your next fifty-state road trip? Then you won't want to miss this great Delish article that features the strangest flavor of ice cream available in each state. As you might expect, not every state has particularly kookie flavors (Alabama, is black walnut really the wackiest you can come up with), but even so, there are plenty of outrageous tastes worth trying.

Personally, I'd love to try Louisiana's champagne and violet or Kansas' pineapple cilantro sorbet, but I admit that I'm a little terrified of New York's horseradish flavor and Maine's lobster ice cream served with real chunks of lobster.

The Death of the Hippies

Posted: 12 Jul 2015 08:00 PM PDT

In the late 1960s, counterculture youth known as hippies swelled the population of San Francisco and surrounding areas. They were rebelling against the middle-class life and sensibilities of their parents and looking for a new way to live. In 1969, photographer Joe Samburg moved there to join his brother Frank in Berkeley.

When they pulled into Berkeley, the hippies were everywhere—standing on every corner, lining every avenue. Joe had never seen anything like it. “People don’t really understand this now, but at that time, in most of the country, you couldn’t have long hair and not be in danger of being beaten up,” Joe explains. “In Boston, cars used to come screeching to a halt and guys would jump out and want to kill me. I’d have to run.” Even in New York, whenever he left Greenwich Village, “I was continually harassed, spit on, and shoved around.” And Joe wasn’t even really a hippie. “I was hip,” he says. “That meant boots, black jeans, a black t-shirt, a leather jacket—the kind of thing you’d maybe see the Rolling Stones wearing.”

In California, the flower-child style was at its apex. “People had really developed their individual looks,” he says. “They were no longer trying to figure out what being a hippie meant. I found that really stimulating. It made a great subject for a photographer—even though, by any middle-class standards, these people were living totally miserable lives.”

They banded together for acceptance and unity, but when a population reaches a critical mass, it will share problems as well as benefits. And the biggest problem the hippies shared was drugs. Mind Blowing Pen And Ink Illustrations By Paul Jackson

Posted: 12 Jul 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Pen and ink illustrations can be called mind-blowing in terms of realism and fine detail, but these incredibly detailed animal illustrations by Paul Jackson, many of which feature an animal's mind literally being blown right out of its skull!

Paul is clearly a student of animal anatomy, as every detail in his drawings is spot on, and even though the subject matter may seem a bit morbid there's a playful quality to his works which softens the science.

Want to see more of Paul's works? Check out his Instagram page and prepare to have your mind gently caressed by the goodness...thought I was gonna say blown, didn't ya?!

10 Tombs of Unknown Soldiers around the World

Posted: 12 Jul 2015 04:00 PM PDT

(Photo: US Army)

In 1931, artisans began work on the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. They inscribed on the outside, "Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God." One unidentified American soldier who perished in World War I was laid to rest there. In later years, other American soldiers from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War were also interred in the tomb.

Regardless of the weather, a sentinel always stands watch over it, to honor the fallen and enforce public decorum.

(Photo: Usuario Barcex)

America's Tomb of the Unknowns is not the only such place of honor in the world, nor was it even the first. Many nations across the world have carefully crafted and guarded tombs for unnamed fallen soldiers. Pictured above is that for Greece located in Athens. It is guarded 24 hours a day. The changing of the guard ceremony is a carefully choreographed and physically demanding task.

These are 2 of 10 tombs for unknown soldiers from around the world rounded up by Amusing Planet, including those in Iraq, Egypt, Canada, the UK, Belgium, and Russia.

A Collection Of Illustrated Grooming Guides For Men

Some guys are in need of a little help when it comes to grooming, and that’s not necessarily their fault.

They just didn’t receive the proper guidance as they grew up, and were never told that growing facial hair is an art form, and beards and moustaches should be chosen according to the shape of your face.

They may also have missed out on this lesson in nail trimming etiquette, which we should all probably print out and bring along with us, especially when riding public transportation!

Thomas Mailaender's Sunburn Art

Posted: 12 Jul 2015 10:00 AM PDT

Artist Thomas Mailaender was once described as "an insatiable and compulsive collector of photographs and sociological patterns." For his project titled Illustrated People, Mailaender selected old photographic negatives from the Archive of Modern Conflict and placed them on the skin of volunteers. By shining a UV lamp over them, he sunburned the images onto their bodies. You can see more examples from the series at Juxtapoz.

The Faces Of Cyberpunk

Posted: 12 Jul 2015 08:00 AM PDT

The Cyberpunk subgenre isn’t just about mankind losing touch with our humanity thanks to an (often biological) link with machines, it’s also about discovering how we can remain human as tech overruns our lives, and an individual as the mega-corps take over the planet.

This search for humanism in a world where tech is fully integrated into our lives is what comes to mind as I look at these simply wonderful images by Adrian Dadich, a concept artist from Australia.

Adrian's illustrations capture the Cyberpunk aesthetic perfectly, demonstrating how people will look when tech is integrated into their bodies and how these “upgrades” will forever change the standard of beauty.

The 10 Most Expensive Whiskeys in the World

That's a lot, but it's not even close to the most expensive whiskey in the world. You can find more delicious-looking and extremely costly whiskeys at First We Feast.
