| Dear UCS supporter, With two days to go, we still need 620 people to join the Union of Concerned Scientists to meet our goal of 1,500 member gifts this month. Will you take a moment to become a member now? As you know, we do a lot more than just play defense. We use science to make our world better. And I've always been surprised that so many of our members respond most energetically when we talk about corporate and political attacks on science—and not when we talk about all the other positive real-world impacts their gifts bring about. So, I have a proposition for you. Today, let's prove that UCS members care just as much about using science to improve our lives as they do about attacks from climate deniers and corporate front groups. 620 gifts needed before Wednesday to hit our last membership goal this year—become a member now for all the GOOD we do together! It's undeniable: when we email about good news, fewer people donate. And I get it—I know I pull out my wallet when I read about things like the 22 industry-funded front groups trying to roll back progress on the first ever limits on power plant pollution. But lest we forget, UCS members worked for years to bring those pollution limits to life. Here are a few other proactive campaigns your gift will help support: Producing more clean energy. UCS didn't just defend the science behind the EPA's historic new power plant carbon pollution limits—we were among the most effective voices calling for strengthening the use of wind, solar, and other clean energy in the final rules. Cutting big truck pollution. It may not seem like the "sexiest" topic—but our analysis shows that new trucks could cut their fuel use by 40 percent using existing, affordable technology—slashing global warming pollution and saving billions of gallons of fuel each year.1 We've met face-to-face with top officials at the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Transportation to share our analysis, brought experts to testify at public hearings, AND delivered more than 23,000 letters from supporters like you to major shippers like Walmart, FedEx, and UPS urging them to support strong truck fuel economy standards. Preventing the destruction of tropical forests. We've gotten more than 12 major consumer product brands to commit to using deforestation-free palm oil, including a big, recent win with Clorox coming on board.2 And in the coming months we'll begin focusing our energies on retail outlets, to make sure that they're doing their part to become part of the solution to stopping deforestation. All that good news is your doing, really. As a member-based organization that solicits no funds from corporations or the government, we are—literally—made by your support. Starting your UCS membership will strengthen these efforts and help us do even more. Be one of the 620 members we need to step up this month. Make your gift now. Be proud of all the good things you make possible. I am.
