Location Notes:
Completed in 2005, this home, with its very modern exterior sticks out in the historic Tower Grove South neighborhood of mostly century old brick and wooden houses. This house was on the market for 3 years starting in 2011, as one that people either loved or hated. One realtor at the time said it would probably only appeal to someone from the east or west coast. That's what happened. Todd Bohrer, who had lived in San Diego for 18 years and was thinking of moving back to St. Louis, saw the listing and immediately purchased it in 2013, moving in August 2014, and since making a number of improvements to the interior and outdoor landscaping.
The original owner commissioned world renowned architect, also a Washington University professor, Adrian Luchini to build a modern affordable house for him in 2004 on a vacant lot in this historic neighborhood. The result is a two story 1300 square foot giant vinyl silver square with a large elephant ear window protruding from the front and irregularly spaced small windows dotting the side. The inside has a loft-like look with an open floor plan, concrete floors, custom cabinetry, and built in shelving. The one bedroom on the second floor features a deep soaking tub. It has a very California feel to it.
Todd has since added a larger side window and a sun room in the back. The interior is furnished with mid-century modern furnishings and original art. He has landscaped the back yard to include a garden, koi pond and two shipping containers, one which is furnished as a cozy outdoor living room. There is also a retro 1961 16-foot turquoise and white Shasta Airflight trailer, which can be utilized as a guest room and also taken on camping trips.
Here are links to some articles written about this house while it was still on the market between 2011-2013:
Wine Notes from California:
California produces two thirds of the wine in the U.S and 95% of U.S. wine exports are from California, with an increase of 30 % between 2005 and 2006.
Regulations state that a wine can claim to be from California only if the grapes come from California. If a certain region is named, at least 75% of its grape must come from that region. However, some wine labels stating "Made and Bottled" may only have 10% California grapes.
The best known regions are Sonoma Valley and Napa Valley. However, wine is produced in all parts of the state in 100 viticulture areas, and the wide variety of terrains and climates in California make it suitable for growing every type of grape. However, the climates and soils are especially conducive to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Zinfandel is a distinctive showcase California grape. This is a red grape, which is strong, with a spicy flavor. Unfortunately, many Americans think of Zinfandel as the pink stuff known as White Zinfandel, a recently invented and lesser quality sweet table wine, which has become the second highest selling wine in the U.S. behind Chardonnay.
