Classic Monster Cereals for Modern Horror Movies

Posted: 01 Nov 2015 02:00 AM PST

General Mills's line of monster-themed cereals have never been particular intimidating. Count Chocula, Boo Berry, and Franken Berry seem like fun people to eat breakfast with. But I'm less confident of surviving a meal with these cereal mascots by Kate Willaert. Her Restricted Mills cereals include Shark Mates, Krumpuffs, and Machete Mateys--all terrifying villains from modern horror flicks. You can see more pictures of them here.

Under Sixty Seconds

The hosts of a Norwegian sketch comedy show meet two guys in California, who are rappers. They ask the Americans to free-associate about what kind of movie they should make -and then they make it!

The “movie” contains the audio of the original conversation, and it’s hilarious! Watch for the getaway, stay for the credits. Contains NSFW language, which is apparently okay for Norwegian TV. -via Metafilter

An Interview With The Exorcist Who Is Running For Mayor Of Toledo

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 10:00 PM PDT

Mayors are among the strangest of all politicians, and over the years we've been treated to an array of crazy mayoral archetypes including the xenophobic, the drug addicted and the downright crazy.

But as far as I know we haven't seen what an exorcist can do as mayor, but if Toledo's most high spirited candidate Opal Covey is elected she's sure to drive away some political demons.

Opal is more than just an exorcist- she's a prophet who discovered her healing abilities when God spoke to her at the age of fourteen, and in 1977 God sent her to take care of the good people of Toledo, Ohio.

Esquire's Matt Miller conducted an interview with Toledo's most famous exorcist to see what she plans to do if elected mayor, and he discovered Opal's mayoral platform revolves around two things- potholes and an amusement park.

Restaurant Turns into McDowell's from Coming to America

In the 1988 movie Coming to America, Eddie Murphy plays an African prince who comes to New York City in search of the sort of woman he wishes to marry: an independent-minded American woman. Casting aside his royal wealth and position, Prince Akeem gets a lowly job at McDowell's -- a fast food restaurant is that is clearly a knockoff of the McDonald's brand.

For Halloween this year, Weiner's Circle, a hot dog joint in Chicago, dressed up like a McDowell's. The management replaced the signs, distributed McDowell's uniforms to its staff, and even gave Louie Anderson an award. DNAinfo reports:

On Friday morning, the restaurant's general manager Scott Brooker orchestrated the transformation of the restaurant at 2622 N. Clark St. by replacing the signs, outfitting his staff in red-and-yellow checkered McDowell's uniforms and even putting up fictional menus and an "Employee of the Month" flier depicting Louie Anderson, who played Maurice in the film.

Day Of The Dead Merc by OneBluebird Art

Wade likes to attend the Dia De Los Muertos festival in Mexico whenever possible, but not because he's obsessed with the dead or hanging out in graveyards. No, Mr. Wilson is not a sicko, at least not in those ways, but he simply can't get enough of that Mexican food! Tacos, chimichangas, burritos, anything involving a tortilla, meat and a pool of salsa simply makes that merc's mouth swoon. And when you can't be killed yet everybody keeps shooting at you you start looking for ways to comfort yourself, and no food is more comforting than Mexican food!

This Disgusting Zombie Wedding Cake Will Make Your Guests Lose Their Appetite

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 06:00 PM PDT

Wedding cakes are created to be tasteful looking and tasty, something lovely for guests to gawk at yet delicious enough for them to devour on the bride and groom's special day.

But when you want your guests to fear your marriage, and the end times it's ushering in, you should serve them a slice of this bloody zombie cake.

It takes guts to gnaw on this grisly mess of a cake, which was created by Cake Cove bakery for their Zombie Horde event in Toronto, Canada, but rest assured- your guests will never forget eating a slice of this sickening cake!

Just a Reminder

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 05:00 PM PDT

Tonight, Daylight Saving Time ends and we go back to Standard Time (in most of the United States, your mileage may vary). Set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed tonight, or at 2AM Sunday. Enjoy that extra hour of sleep you missed back in the spring, but be aware that sunset will be much earlier after the time change. It's our only real chance to time travel.

Meanwhile, you can let C.G.P. Grey explain the reasoning behind Daylight Saving Time.

Or read some Neatolicious Fun Facts about Daylight Saving Time.

Learn The History of Daylight Saving Time in the US.

Remember the case of twins born during the time change, in which the firstborn ended up younger than the second twin by the clock?

Or just enjoy this little ditty to remind you about the clock-setting task ahead.

Periodic Table of Jack-o'-Lanterns

In 2007, the student chapter of the American Chemical Society at Clarkson University celebrated National Chemistry Week with this display of the periodic table of elements carved into pumpkins. I wonder if the transuranic pumpkins rotted before the others?

Which is the Scariest Costume?

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 02:00 PM PDT

What makes a costume scary is a matter of opinion, but few would be comfortable around a working beekeeper, whether it’s Halloween or not! Still, think long and hard about this idea before you use it for trick-or-treat. This is the latest comic from Eric Erbes at Statistical Fact. -Thanks, Eric!

Pod City: Nine Podcasts That’ll Scare Your Pants Off

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 12:00 PM PDT

Happy Halloween, readers! In case you're looking for supplemental spooky material for the evening, mental_floss has put together a list of creepy podcasts that will fit right into the spirit of Halloween. There is something for everyone here, including family friendly material such as this:

The Halloween Haunt
Each October this podcast returns with new episodes about spirits, Halloween history, and more. Aimed at older kids, the eps have spooky sounds but the content probably won’t give them nightmares (i.e. some delve into Halloween traditions around the world). A five-minute runtime also makes the show ideal for short attention spans.

There are also ideas for more hardcore horror enthusiasts. One example:

Lore
This podcast takes the scary tales we’ve heard endless times— about haunted insane asylums, creepy old houses, sinister creatures in the woods—and traces them back to their origin stories. The thoughtful, well-produced episodes appeal to history and horror buffs alike.

Jon Snow White and Other Awesome 2015 Halloween Costumes

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 10:00 AM PDT

Since Halloween is on a Saturday this year, many people wore Halloween costumes to work, school, or parties yesterday. Lucky us! Some really good ones have already been posted on the internet. Like the pun costume Jon Snow White.

Redditor mankardo shared a picture of the Game of Thrones/Disney Princess mashup.

Another pun costume is Ash Wednesday. That’s Ash Ketchum from the Pokemon franchise mashed up with Wednesday Addams. Redditor kdanson introduced him to us.

Everyone loves the movie Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

SAFE_WORD_IS_OUCH and his buddies recreated almost the entire cast of characters from the film. The chain mail is not that heavy -it’s yarn, crocheted by Sir Galahad’s wife. The more you look at this picture, the more details you catch.

Redditor sodamn_insane is 6’ 6” tall. For Halloween, he decided to reveal his secret to his co-workers.

You recall King Jaffe Joffer from the 1988 movie Coming to America. It inspired the later casting of The Lion King. Redditor freethinker84 recreated the look well. In the comment thread, he handed out virtual Zamundan currency to other commenters.

While many people dress up as pop culture characters, some look a little closer to home. A redditor posted a picture of a little girl who dressed up as her own father for Halloween. Her age isn’t given, but she couldn’t be more than three or four. The resemblance is uncanny.

Here’s another father and daughter, posted by a redditor from their workplace. They work together, the daughter is pregnant, and they dressed like each other for Halloween. Here’s what they look like without the costums.

(YouTube link)

And while we’re on fathers and daughters, Michael Tapson created his costume to accompany (and protect) his daughter. He also wrote and performed the music. (via Daily Picks and Flicks)

You can pull off a more subtle costume if you choose a character who you already look like. A perfect example is this Sunmaid Raisin maid, posted by her friend, redditor captainscoop

HazelnutSpread attended a corporate party as Patrick Bateman from the movie American Psycho.

Redditor stoosh5 went to work as Captain Picard. He works in IT. You get the idea that he facepalms at work every day.

Tumblr member feetlips took a slight resemblance and ran with it. She’s a Pom Wonderful bottle! Check out the rest of the pictures at her site: the backside of the dress has the nutritional information!

Why just recreate a movie monster? Everyone does that. Go one step beyond and be the poster! Will Perkins of Art of the Title made the movie poster for the 1982 film The Thing into a Halloween costume.

Redditor Majorxerocom won second place in a costume contest last night. He’s a zombee. And now you will have that Blind Melon song stuck in your head.

The Yakuza Cancels Halloween Festivities Due To Impending Gang Violence

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 08:00 AM PDT

The Yakuza's association with Halloween in Japan seems like a bad joke, but they've been the go-to guys for spooky entertainment and a night full of fun for trick-or-treaters for decades.

(Image via Tomohiko Suzuki)

Last year the gang handed out candy in colorful bags to legions of little costumed kiddies and all went well, but a recent split in the Yakuza's ranks has them fearing a gunfight will break out so they decided to cancel the Halloween festivities.

Adding to the surreal nature of this story is the fact that the cancellation was announced with this note posted on the gate of Yamaguchi-gumi's headquarters in the port city of Kobe:

"The Halloween event that has taken place annually on 31 October will be cancelled this year due to various reasons. We regret disappointing parents and children who are looking forward to the event, but we promise to hold it next year, so please look forward to that."

Man, the Japanese mafia seem like a bunch of stand-up guys!

Woman Has Romantic Photo Shoot with the Love of Her Life: Pizza

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 07:00 AM PDT

Nicole Larson didn't settle for second best. She waited until Mr. Right came along and then snatched him up. And when it came time for the couple to get photos of themselves together to share with their friends and family, they went all out. Larson, a college student in Alberta, hired Miriam Ott to photograph her and her pizza together in romantic scenes.

Larson is usually a private person, but she decided to share these charming photos with her friends and, later, the world. You can see more of them at BuzzFeed. Hopefully we'll eventually get to see an engagement shoot from the loving couple!

Ten Of The Most Haunted Theaters In The World

Posted: 31 Oct 2015 06:00 AM PDT

(Theatre Royale, Drury Lane/Image Link)

The Phantom of the Opera left monster fans fascinated by the thought of a haunted theater, and yet when they attended a performance they found nothing but snoozing men in suits and a whole lotta singing.

But those who didn't get the Dickens scared out of them at the theater were simply in the wrong place, because there are theaters all over the world that are, by all accounts, actually haunted.

If it was a genuine Phantom experience they were after they should have attended the Paris Opera's Palais Garnier, which inspired the novel's setting when an apartment and a male corpse were discovered during renovation.
