Posted: 01 Oct 2016 04:00 AM PDT Coral is a living animal that manufactures entire islands, atolls, and reefs by buildings its own skeleton. Coral that make up the Great Barrier Reef are in danger from climate change, pollution, and traffic. This time-lapse video from Barcelona studio MyLapse shows how coral move, which is often too slow to follow in real time. You’ll also get an idea of the beauty, variety, and vivid colors in different types of coral. -via the Presurfer
Ayumi Omori’s Twins in Dreamland Posted: 01 Oct 2016 02:00 AM PDT Ayumi Omori is the mother of two-year-old twins, a boy and a girl. Nap time is a crucial break for mothers, particularly those with a couple of two-year-olds, and Omari takes that opportunity for creativity. While the kids nap, she arranges intricate scenery around them to create cute pictures of their “adventures.” I saw this magic show and thought, Aw, she bought two shirts just the same for this picture. Wait, they’re twins. This family probably has a lot of clothes in two copies. Don’t let him fall off the cliff! There’s a shark waiting down there! Too late, the shark got both of them, and their matching shirts. Not sure what this is about. “That’s no moon… that’s a vacuum cleaner!” Your Amazon Package has arrived! Kermit’s Revenge. See lots more of Omori’s work at Instagram. -via Pleated-Jeans
An Interesting Stream of Water Posted: 01 Oct 2016 12:00 AM PDT At first glance, you might think this water is frozen, but it’s flowing. After it’s disrupted, it goes right back to the exact shape it had before, and it looks like its not even moving. They are draining a pool. This is called laminar flow, when a fluid moves at a slow speed, under the consistent pressure of gravity, without disruption (until the guy sticks his hand in it). We aren’t used to seeing that, because what comes out of our faucets and hoses is under variable pressure, changes direction, and contains bubbles, which all cause turbulence. -via Digg

Brandon Valley High School in Brandon, South Dakota, held spirit days during homecoming week, in which the students were encouraged to dress up in a different theme each day. On “Ranch Day,” most students dressed as cowboys or ranch hands. Senior student Carson Haase thought outside the box and mocked up a cardboard bottle of ranch dressing as her costume. The photographs went viral on social media. Haase said she got up the nerve to do it in tribute to her friend Brittany Corcoran, who committed suicide in March.

An Animated Crime Movie Starring Snow White And The Seven Dwarves Posted: 30 Sep 2016 08:00 PM PDT Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is one of Disney's most famous features, and even though the fairy tale has been adapted a million times our mind always goes back to the Disney version whenever Snow White is mentioned. That lasting Disney influence isn't necessarily a bad thing, especially in animation, and when a Snow White adaptation manages to show us something new while giving a nod to Disney you know it's something special. (NSFW due to language) The Seven Red Hoods - Taupes from Eddy on Vimeo. The Seven Red Hoods was created by Léo Verrier, with production by Eddy and ARTE France and a bunch of wonderful models created by Martine Lafont, which really add to the unique look of the film. -Via io9
How All 50 State Capitals Got Their Names Posted: 30 Sep 2016 06:00 PM PDT It doesn’t matter so much that the 50 cities on this list are state capitals, because any list of town name origins contains some interesting stories. However, using state capitals gives every American a connection to at least one of them. I never knew the story, but I had assumed, I guess, that the capital of Kentucky has some connection to Frankfurt, Germany. Wrong.
But they get more interesting. Check out Minnesota’s capital.

These Disturbingly Realistic Masks Seem Appropriate For The 2016 Election Posted: 30 Sep 2016 04:00 PM PDT No matter who you're voting for or what your political beliefs may be you have to agree on one thing- Hillary, Donald and (formerly) Bernie aren't the most attractive candidates who've ever run for president. They aim to prove looks aren't everything, but when you see their heads sitting on hairier, scarier and/or sexier bodies the look IS everything- everything nightmares are made of. Artist Landon Meier of Hyperflesh made a one-off mask of Trump, Sanders and Clinton in order to prepare American citizens for the true horror of the 2016 election. Posted: 30 Sep 2016 02:00 PM PDT Iggy Pop has a cockatoo he adores named Biggy Pop. Biggy has his own Instagram account, because he is a natural performer. The video above was posted there just this morning, showing Iggy playing with Biggy in the guise of a hand puppet. Biggy shows off his rhythm as the puppet sings to him. -via Metafilter
Frida Guy - Art History Is A Lie Posted: 30 Sep 2016 12:00 PM PDT Not all of the Mushroom Kingdom's citizens appreciate fine art, but the little Shy Guys are huge admirers of art, and their paintings and sculptures fill the halls of Bowser's castle. Unfortunately, many of their greatest works have been lost over the years thanks to those art hatin' plumber bros Mario and Luigi, aka the guys who keep storming Bowser's castle and smashing all the art. It seems Mario has no appreciation for the Shy Guys or their art, all he ever wants to do is smash stuff on the way to battling his romantic rival Bowser once again. Perhaps the Shy Guys should start painting on and making sculptures out of those blocks even Super Mario can't smash? Change the face of art history by wearing this Frida Guy t-shirt by Katie Clark Art, it's the cute yet creepy way to show love for your favorite artist and video game series at the same time! Posted: 30 Sep 2016 12:00 PM PDT There are some beautiful sights to behold if you can manage to detach your eyeballs from the various screens in your house and take them outside, because nature videos ain't got nothin' on nature live. But living things who are forced to live outside want what all of us indoor dwellers have- smartphones, computers, and some lucrative tech stocks. According to this Pie Comic that's what people call "the balance of nature". -Via Geeks Are Sexy
Posted: 30 Sep 2016 10:00 AM PDT Americans may get the impression that Europeans speak all European languages, mainly because they often learn several languages. That’s not the case, as demonstrated by Norwegian comedian Anders Nilsen. A couple of years ago, he produced a song in Spanish. Nilsen doesn’t speak Spanish, as is made clear in the song, which consists of random Spanish words, names, and phrases, relying heavily on menu items. Nilsen wanted to make the point that a song could become a hit even if the lyrics make no sense. Salsa Tequila indeed became a hit in several northern European countries: Norway, Belgium, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, and Sweden. The tune is certainly catchy, but was the song a hit because people got the joke, or in spite of it? In Spain, southern Europe, and the Americas, it’s obviously a nonsense song, but it still could have been popular.
Heavenly Photos Taken From An Airplane Cockpit Posted: 30 Sep 2016 09:00 AM PDT Flying a plane seems like a nerve-wracking experience, especially when people are relying on you to fly them safely to their destination, but one of the rewards is that heavenly view pilots get to see from the cockpit. In fact, pilots get to see such breathtaking sights it's a shame they can't snap pics the whole time they're flying the plane! But some pilots, such as photographer and Senior First Officer Christiaan Van Heijstfind, find the time to shoot and fly, capturing the breathtaking sights only pilots get to see. Christiaan is a self-professed lover of natural light, which is the only light available while shooting through a cockpit window, but the long exposure times often make the pilots look like ghosts. Posted: 30 Sep 2016 08:00 AM PDT Casey Neistat makes videos about his life that make the rest of us wonder why we even bother. He recently managed to get an upgrade on his Emirates Airlines flight from Dubai to New York City. First class on the flight is a $21,000 ticket, but since empty seats make no money, he was glad to help them fill the section. And show us what first class really is. If you’re going to be a plane 14 hours, there’s no better way to do it. Read more about Neistat’s airline adventure at Money Inc.
Underrated X-Men Who Are Secretly Awesome Posted: 30 Sep 2016 07:00 AM PDT There have been so many mutants on the X-Men roster it's hard to keep track of them all, and minor league mutants like Jubilee and Shatterstar are often overshadowed by A-listers like Wolverine and Jean Grey. But certain eras of the comic saw dozens of new members joining the X-Men, and even though these newbies were overshadowed they had to be secretly awesome to join the X-Men, right? Shatterstar is a Liefeld creation, but don't hold that against him, because this badass from Mojoworld is not only one of the strongest fighters to ever join the X-Men- he's a trailblazer for gay characters in comics. And speaking of blaze- Jubilee's plasmoid "fireworks" are often described as being nothing but flashes of light, but like most mutant powers she just had to learn how to control it to unleash its full potential.
Get A Tattoo, Get Free Burgers For Life Posted: 30 Sep 2016 06:00 AM PDT Like burgers? Live in Australia? Well, you could get free burgers for life from Cafe 51 if you get a burger tattoo. Not just any burger tattoo will work though, you have to go through an application process and if you get approved, then you have to get a life size tattoo of one of their extreme burger creations with their logo. So far only one person has actually gotten their tattoo, but the restaurant has recieved over 3,000 applications, so I guess there are quite a few Australians that are dying for a free burger every day. |
