big red flags (Betsy DeVos)

There were a lot of red flags during Betsy DeVos’s confirmation hearing for Secretary of Education. There was the fact that she did not recognize schools receiving federal funding are required to give disabled Americans the same opportunity for education as those without disabilities. There was her refusal to promise she wouldn’t rule out defunding public schools. And then there is her problematic record. Largely as a result of DeVos’s lobbying, for-profit-charter schools in Michigan are among the lowest performing and have the weakest oversight of any in the country. Michigan has no power to shut them down when they are failing. Betsy DeVos is a billionaire lobbyist who has never attended a public school or worked in one. I cannot entrust her with our nation’s public education system. If you agree sign here. I attended public schools. I’m proud of Wisconsin’s tradition of supporting quality public education, and I believe every child is entitled to one. Strong public school systems level the playing field. They provide children with opportunity no matter where they live, how much money they come from, or what their backgrounds are. I will not support a nominee for Education Secretary who wants to take money from our public schools and put it into a private system. When you rob public education of resources, you rob children of their potential. Every child deserves access to a quality public education.
