SEE YOU IN CONGRESS

SEE YOU IN CONGRESS
While you were sleeping, Senate Republicans pushed through another one of Trump's dangerous and conflict-ridden nominees, Rep. Tom Price. Price was confirmed as Secretary of Health and Human Services in the middle of the night last night after Senate Democrats put off the vote for as long as the rules allowed. Price may have been confirmed, but the fight isn't over. You can still resist Price by holding your senator accountable, sharing your story, and going to events near you. And, there are still many nominees yet to be confirmed. Here are just a few of the key nominees who've yet to be confirmed.
See the full the list of nominees waiting to be confirmed and vacant positions here.
ACTION OF THE DAY
Resist Trump's Cabinet. This week, three of Trump's most dangerous nominees were confirmed. First, Mike Pence was forced to make history as the first VP to cast a tie breaking vote in a cabinet-level, in the confirmation of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education. Then, Congressional Republicans rushed the confirmations of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General and Tom Price as Secretary of HHS.
Now that these nominees are confirmed, it's our job to hold them accountable. Here's what you can do:
  1. Sign this petition to tell Congress and the Administration to investigate Price's scandalous stock purchases.
  2. Take the 2018 pledge to hold your elected officials accountable. See how your senators voted here.
  3. Show your resistance by starting or joining a #ResistTrump rally near you. See a list of nationwide rallies here and submit one to our list here.
WHAT'S TRENDING
ALL CAPS. That's how Trump responded to the major blow of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals decision last night that ruled against reinstating his executive order creating a Muslim and refugee ban. The decision means that Trump's order barring immigration from seven majority-Muslim countries and suspending refugee resettlement for four months (and Syrian refugees indefinitely) will remain on hold until the order makes its way through court. The next stop is the Supreme Court. The Trump Administration is likely to file an emergency application to the Supreme Court, which means a decision from the Supremes could come soon.
Trump's America. Yesterday, an Arizona woman and mother of U.S. children was deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after showing up for her annual check-in with the agency. That was only the beginning. Last night, in Los Angeles, ICE conducted raids in homes, resulting in the detention of about 100 individuals and we're hearing rumors of raids in cities across the country. One man's only mistake was opening the door to agents who were looking for another individual. Make sure to share this that everyone knows their rights in Trump's America.
#ForProfitPrez. This week, Nordstrom decided to drop Ivanka Trump's line due to lagging sales and her father/POTUS Donald Trump decided to take to Twitter to complain about it. Then just yesterday, Trump's Senior Advisor and czar of alternative facts Kellyanne Conway told people to go buy Ivanka's line on national television while she was at the White House. Conway used her public office to give Ivanka a "free commercial," aka benefiting a person with whom she is "affiliated in a nongovernmental capacity"—which appears to be a clear violation of the law.
Chaffing. There was a lot of it in Utah last night as Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) faced a loud and angry crowd at a town hall last night. Constituents in the town hall pressed Chaffetz on his role in investigating Trump's conflicts of interest, the environment, and Planned Parenthood funding. The deafening boos and "do your job chants" forced Chaffetz to end the event 40 minutes early. The takeaway? Resistance works.
UNDER THE RADAR
Serious Business. The White House is wading into some deep trouble because of its ties with Russia. The latest? National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's massive lie. As it turns out, despite his denials, Flynn did in fact discuss U.S. sanction policy in a private, pre-inauguration conversation with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Flynn apparently left Kislayk with the impression that President Obama's newly imposed sanctions (a response to Russian hacking) would be revisited at a later time in the new administration. We're having a hard time believing, as Trump claimed, that his White House has "NTOHING TO DO WITH RUSSIA".
FACT CHECK
Another (false) attack. Across the globe, false reports are emerging that Canada is pushing laws to make condemning Islam a crime. Although M-103 – a non-binding motion which "calls on the government to condemn Islamophobia and all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination" was proposed to the Canadian Parliament, no actual legislation has been introduced. And as a protector of free speech it's highly unlikely Prime Minster Justin Trudeau would support such legislation. Even if it's used to subjugate citizens of differing religious views. This comes after 70,000 Canadians voiced concerns mostly following the (very real) Quebec mosque attacks and sharp uptick in anti-Muslim violence.
GOOD NEWS
Double the fun, again. Looks like progressives are doubling. Following in the footsteps the Knowles-Carter family, George and Amal Clooney are welcoming twins. Progressives 2. Trump 0.
