FW: 10 Thousand Hours to Profits?

Studies have shown that it can take decades to master complex tasks.

It takes 10 to 50 thousand hours to become a master or grandmaster chess player…

And Tiger Woods has literally been walking around with a golf club in his hands since he was 6 months old.

To truly be the best at something…

You really have to put in a lot of time and effort into practicing.

For me, the idea of mastery is an interesting concept to think about because I am widely considered to be an expert in the field of trading options.

I have been trading professionally since 1992.

I am asked by the financial media to come on television constantly to share my insights.

And I have been extremely successful in my career due to my skills.

Also, much like a professional athlete or a chess master, it is true that it took me a few years (and a few tough lessons) to get really good at trading.

But I fundamentally disagree with the idea that you need to be an expert trader to be profitable.

I am without a doubt a better and more mature trader than I was early on in my career…

But it's not like I wasn't good enough to be successful back then.

The key piece on my journey to profitability was finding a mentor.

Having a mentor allowed me to do a few key things.

First, I was able to shorten up my learning curve by understanding what NOT to do.

Let's be honest, it is no secret that making money trading isn't hard…

The key to success is making sure you don't lose it!

Which is why the first rule of trading is don't make the same mistake twice…

And by understanding the mistakes my mentor made I was able to avoid them before I made them.

The second rule of trading is to always have a plan.

When I was younger and more easily excited, sometimes I would act impulsively…

Now, I always go into a trade setup with a clear idea of what I am trying to accomplish and how I plan on positioning myself.

The third rule of trading is to come to terms with what you don't know and move on when you make mistakes.

The reality is that nobody is right 100% of the time.

The best hitters in baseball are thrilled if they succeed 3 out of 10 times.

Trading is the same way…

You just have to make sure your wins tally up to be more than your losses.

So to those people that say you need to be a "master" to be successful at trading…

It is simply not true…

You just need to know your limitations, have a level head, and make sure you have a good mentor.

One of the things that I am most proud of is that now that I have crossed the "mastery threshold" I have actually moved into the mentorship role.

It has been particularly rewarding to mentor my colleague Charlie Moon because he has now achieved mastery and moved into a mentorship role himself.

That's what life is all about.  Giving back and doing good.
