Statistics in Schools brings subjects to life using real-world Census Bureau data to create materials for use year after year at all grade levels.

Happy New Year!

Learn something new in 2022! Want to pursue a hobby or enhance your tech skills? Have fun this month with U.S. Census Bureau data related to National Hobby Month and National Technology Day. Then, as we honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on January 17, teach students interesting facts on how certain aspects of the lives of African Americans have changed since he delivered his famous "I Have a Dream" speech.

It's National Hobby Month!

National Hobby Month

Outdoor activities, painting, reading… what are your students' favorite hobbies? Share our A Child's Day visualization with your class to check out data on the participation of boys and girls in clubs or sports or the average times per week children 3 to 5 years old are read to—a great way to inspire a hobby! Use the accompanying activity, How Does Our Class Compare? to have students collect, organize, and compare data about their classmates who play sports, take lessons, and participate in clubs.

National Technology Day

How has technology improved your life? From smart cars to smart phones, technology has revolutionized every aspect of how we do things, including collecting and disseminating data. Celebrate National Technology Day by exploring several Census Bureau data tools with your students. They can use these tech tools such as State Facts for Students to find data on the number of ice cream stores in a state; compare the number of people who have a bachelor's degree or higher in a large urban city like Chicago with the number in a small rural city like Sidney, Montana using QuickFacts; or use an interactive map on Census Business Builder to explore selected areas for business opportunities and compare it to neighboring areas.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day – January 17

Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was observed for the first time in 1986. King was an influential civil rights leader and is celebrated for his work on racial equality. In observance of this day, share our I Have A Dream activity with your elementary students. They will analyze census data and graphs that demonstrate changes in population, voting rates, and education levels of African Americans since the early 1960s. Did you know the Black or African American population alone in the United States in 2020 was 41 million?
