Hey Friend, February is winding down and we're going to leave you with this Black History Month reminder: "Black Joy is Limitless." The Trevor Project proudly holds space for Black individuals on our staff to foster collective care and joy. We create intentional spaces, called Affinity Groups, that allow members of Team Trevor to connect with each other around their different intersectional identities. Black@Trevor, one of The Trevor Project's pioneer Affinity Groups, "leads with a mission to create spaces and resources for employees who identify within the Black Diaspora (and their allies) to connect, grow relationships, and build community." Be on the lookout for Black@Trevor Spotlights as we celebrate the Black LGBTQ community throughout the year. "There Is No Limit To Black Joy." Over the next few months, we'll feature member spotlights from across Trevor's Affinity Groups. This month, we're proud to spotlight Product Manager and co-chair of Black@Trevor, Kendra Gaunt (she/her). She explains how Black@Trevor developed and reflects on Black joy. Get to Know Kendra 53% Of Black LGBTQ Youth Wanted Mental Health Counseling But Didn't Get It Last Year Black LGBTQ young people hold multiple marginalized identities, making them particularly susceptible to mental health concerns. Experiences of discrimination, rejection, threats, and violence are compounded and can lead to negative mental health outcomes. To help address these racial disparities, we've created a guide specific to supporting Black LGBTQ youth mental health. Read the Guide LGBTQ Youth Diagnosed With Eating Disorders Report Nearly Four Times Greater Odds of Attempting Suicide New Trevor research examines eating disorders among LGBTQ youth, including which particular subgroups report the highest rates of eating disorders and how eating disorders relate to suicide attempts among LGBTQ youth. More can be done, including improving access to culturally competent and affirming care. Dig into the Research Zelda Barnz Helps Spread the Word: LGBTQ-Affirming Schools Save Lives Co-creator of HBO Max's Genera+ion Zelda Barnz has teamed up with The Trevor Project to talk about the importance of LGBTQ inclusion in schools. Our research shows that access to LGBTQ-affirming schools is associated with a nearly 40% decrease in attempted suicide. Together, we can work towards creating a safer, more supportive world for LGBTQ young people — both in and out of the classroom.
