Events at the Library of Congress Japanese Culture Day Saturday, April 9, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. ET Children of all ages, families and teachers can learn about Japanese culture through reading, writing and craft-making with Japanese cultural and linguistic professionals during the Library's Japanese Culture day. Books related to Japan and Japanese culture will also be on display. Special highlights include a Japanese drum presentation by Miyako Taiko led by Mark Rooney and a karate demonstration by Tsuyoshi Takemori from D.C. Yamato-juku Club. Learn more.  New Exhibitions at the Library of Congress Not an Ostrich: And Other Images from America's Library Organized by the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles and drawn from the photography collections of the Library of Congress, this new exhibition is a taste of this institution's spectacular holdings of more than 14 million photographs. Selected images reproduced for this online exhibition were made between 1839 and today. They trace the evolution of photography, from daguerreotypes and other early processes to contemporary digital technology. Learn more.  Gershwin Prize for Popular Song The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song celebrates the work of an artist whose career reflects lifetime achievement in promoting song as a vehicle of musical expression and cultural understanding. This display includes material from the Library's collections that highlights the work of each of the past Gershwin prize recipients as well as the 2022 recipient, pop music icon Lionel Richie. Learn more.  Here to Stay: The Legacy of George and Ira Gershwin Experience the glamour and sophistication of the 1920s and 1930s in this permanent tribute to brothers George and Ira Gershwin, who helped provide a musical background to the period. The exhibition contains a wealth of materials that provide insight into their careers and personalities, including manuscript and printed music, lyric sheets and librettos, personal and business correspondence, photographs, paintings and drawings, all from the Library's Gershwin Collection, the world's preeminent resource for materials about the Gershwins. Learn more.  Webinars from the Library of Congress Object Lesson: Exploring Cherry Blossom Varieties Wednesday, April 6, 7-8 p.m. ET How many varieties of cherry blossoms can you find in your neighborhood? How do you describe their colors? Nakahara will offer a close-up exploration of exquisite watercolor illustrations of the 1912 gift of cherry blossom trees from the city of Tokyo to Washington, D.C. to increase your visual recognition of cherry blossoms each spring. Register for this event.  Orientation to Legal Research Webinar Series: Tracing Federal Regulations Thursday, April 7, 11 a.m.- Noon p.m. ET This entry in the series provides an overview of U.S. federal regulations, including information about the notice and comment rulemaking process, the publication and citation of regulations, and the tracing of regulations from the Code of Federal Regulations, to the proposed rule in the Federal Register, to the regulation's docket. Register for this event.  Object Lesson: One Man's Life Dedicated to Peace Thursday, April 7, 7-8 p.m. ET Mari Nakahara, co-author of the book Cherry Blossom: Sakura Collections from the Library of Congress, will introduce the Library collections related to Ambassador Saito, through which people may learn about him and his efforts to promote peace in the years before the outbreak of World War II. His granddaughter Tomiko Kagei will also join our conversation. Register for this event.   Object Lesson: Seasonal Appreciations in Japanese Visual Art Friday, April 8, 7-8 p.m. ET Katherine Blood, co-author of the book Cherry Blossom: Sakura Collections from the Library of Congress, will highlight 18th century to contemporary examples, including related, recently acquired prints, drawings, and posters.
