A "culture of denial" has allowed predators to flourish in the Metropolitan Police, a damning review triggered by the murder of Sarah Everard has found. The force was found to be institutionally racist, misogynist and homophobic with scant regard for victims of sexual violence. Baroness Louise Casey said she could not rule out more offenders like murderer Wayne Couzens and serial rapist David Carrick lurking in Britain's largest force. "I cannot sufficiently assure you that that is not the case," she told a press conference. "This isn't wrong-uns or 'bad apples', this is systemic failure across the system." Key findings in the 360-page report included: - Two of the best-resourced units, the Specialist Firearms Command and the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, had the worst culture
- Austerity "disfigured" the Met with cuts between 2010 and 2019 leaving women victims "thrown to one side"
- Fridges containing evidence for rape cases were broken, meaning cases were dropped
- Alleged domestic abusers, including an officer accused of rape, remain in service

RMT accept new pay offer: Is commuter strike misery finally at an end? |
The train strike stalement, which has seen numerous walkouts by rail workers over the last six months, may finally be at an end after RMT union members voted in favour of the latest pay offer from Network Rail by a large majority. A total of 15,754 members voted, representing a turn-out of nearly 90 per cent. Of those who voted, 12,047 were in favour – a majority of 76:24 in favour of ending the strike action that began nine months ago. In a statement the union said: "The RMT National Executive has announced that the vote means the end of the trade dispute with Network Rail." The deal includes a pay rise of 9.2 per cent covering last year and this year, with an extra uplift for lower-paid workers, with extended discounted rail travel benefits. The RMT general secretary, Mick Lynch, said: "Strike action and the inspiring solidarity and determination of members has secured new money and a new offer which has been clearly accepted by our members and that dispute is now over." |
