He understands the appeal of traveling the world to photograph animals. But Visarute Angkatavanich has spent years at home capturing hypnotic images of the “moving color” of Siamese fighting fish (above).
He knows it’s hard enough to get that magic moment with people. But these swirling, painterly fish? Well, Angkatavanich has a few tricks—and, over time, has come to a deeper understanding of his subjects.

Betta beauty: Are they fish? Or are they dancers? Maybe, both. Their flowing fins and vibrant colors are a result from centuries of selective breeding, dating back to 14th century Thailand.
These Siamese fighting fish have also evolved to tolerate slow-moving, low-oxygen water—and can supplement their oxygen intake by gulping air at the water’s surface, like the golden fish (above left) is about to.
