| The room was full of handsome men in snappy suits—not at all the kind of guys you’d expect to have a history of incarceration and/or addiction. Just like any graduation, there were mothers, fathers, wives, girlfriends and a lot of children. They were all there to see their person . . . their dad . . . receive recognition for all he had achieved by completing the New Pathways for Good Dads program.
The program is rigorous. Dads attend a weekly two-hour class for at least six months. They work on getting a job or a better job. They pursue regular contact with their children, if possible. If needed, they address their child support issues.
The impact is transformative. One young mother hugged me warmly and said, “He’s a different man with me and our children. This has made all the difference.”
Who would have thought it? Men gathering to learn how to be a better dad is not flashy or really that expensive, but there is a huge return on this small investment. When we help fathers, we accomplish a lot.
- Our communities are safer. Men in our program work honest jobs and care for their families instead of selling drugs.
- Our economy is better. Employed men have more money to spend. They work harder because they’re working for their families.
- Our schools are stronger. Engaged fathers have children who do better in school.
We’re the underdog in this fight against poverty, crime, mental health problems and school concerns. But when we work together to help fathers, we more effectively address every social concern we have today.
