What to know: The pause, which took effect a week ago and allowed for exchanges of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners, expired this morning.
The latest: Israel's military said it resumed airstrikes on the Gaza Strip minutes after the pause ended. The U.S. said Israel agreed to demands to minimize civilian deaths.

A gag order on Donald Trump was reinstated in his New York fraud case.

Why? An appeals court yesterday upheld a judge's order that prevents the former president from making public comments about court staff in the civil case.
Why it's needed: The order was issued after Trump posted a photo of an employee that the judge said led to threats. Trump has recently taken aim at the judge's wife.
In related news: Kenneth Chesebro, one of Trump's co-defendants in the Georgia election interference case, may testify in similar probes in Arizona and Nevada.

A federal judge blocked Montana's TikTok ban yesterday.

What to know: The law, the first of its kind in the nation, was set to take effect Jan. 1. It would have prohibited all use of the hugely popular video app in Montana.
The ruling: The ban "oversteps state power" and was designed to target the Chinese company that owns TikTok, rather than to protect Montanans, the judge said.

The number of malaria cases surged by millions last year.

The data: There were about 249 million cases across the globe in 2022, the World Health Organization said yesterday. That's an increase of 5 million from 2021.
Why? Extreme weather events such as catastrophic flooding in Pakistan. A hotter world will probably only fuel the spread of deadly diseases like malaria.

Shane MacGowan, the frontman of the Pogues, has died.

His legacy: He helped to reinvent the Irish music scene with the Pogues, fusing punk rock with Celtic influences. "Fairytale of New York" became one of the band's best-known songs.
What we know: The 65-year-old died yesterday, his wife said. He had struggled with drug and alcohol addiction and was hospitalized last year with viral brain inflammation.
