A message from Congresswoman Ann Wagner
| | | | | | | Dear , Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and we take the time to reflect on Dr. King’s incredible legacy that changed our nation for the better. The world watched the horrors that occurred in Israel on October 7th and we resolved that this evil has no place in our world. Hamas must be eradicated. As Vice Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Co-Chair of the Abraham Accords Caucus, I went to see the situation on the ground for myself, insist upon the immediate release of American hostages held by Hamas, and plan for the day after in Gaza to finally achieve safety and stability in the region. The situation on the ground is so volatile we had to travel by C-130 between countries. If the Middle East is ever to know peace and prosperity, Arab countries, Israel, and the United States must stand together in opposing the violent agenda of Iran and its proxies—in Gaza and throughout the region. It’s time for the U.S. to show strong leadership. We must engage friends, allies, and partners in planning for the “day after” in Gaza and restoring security regionwide. In my work as co-chair of the Abraham Accords Caucus, I am committed to working with responsible partners like Egypt, Bahrain, and other Abraham Accords countries on Gaza’s post-Hamas future, countering Iran, and protecting freedom of navigation. Read my full report on my Congressional Delegation to the Middle East here. I was glad to see the United States and United Kingdom, with the support of Australia, Netherlands, Bahrain, and Canada, launch severe counterstrikes on Houthi targets—a clear consequence of the Houthis’ unprecedented attacks on global commerce. We must restore deterrence, working in lockstep with allies and partners. These Iranian puppets will not get away with their assaults on civilian vessels. As Chairman of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, I, along with the rest of our Financial Services Committee leadership, sent a letter to SEC Chair Gensler demanding a briefing on the SEC’s compromised X account, which led to a false tweet announcing the approval of Bitcoin ETFs on January 9th. This was clear market manipulation that impacted millions of investors, and we will get more answers from Chair Gensler on this incident. Read our full letter here. The President sent a Cabinet-Wide memo last summer urging Agency heads to return agencies to in-person work. The government-wide failure to return to in-office work has hampered critical services and wasted taxpayer resources on empty office leases. The GAO has provided data to Congress revealing a shocking disregard for the President’s directive, with many agencies utilizing just a fraction of federal space allocated to their agency. HUD utilized a mere 7 percent in the three-month period between January to March 2023 and today I asked Secretary Fudge what her plan is to bring HUD back to pre-pandemic levels of in-person work. Watch here. I chaired a hearing to examine the Department of Labor’s proposed fiduciary rule that would leave millions of Americans who are just starting their retirement savings journey without access to sound financial advice–resulting in higher costs, fewer choices, and reduced service. I’ve been pushing back against this misguided effort since I first came to Congress in 2013 and am in utter disbelief that we’re still having this fight. As we saw when the 2016 rule went into effect, this proposal will shut millions of low and middle-income Americans out of the financial advice market, and we would be left with two classes of investors: those who can afford investment advice, and those who cannot. Watch here. Last week was National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. We wore blue to show our support for survivors of trafficking and raise awareness so we can bring the perpetrators of this horrific crime to justice. Sincerely, Ann Wagner Member of Congress | | | | | | |
