State control, crime surge, and police recruiting
 

St. Louis Police Chief Robert Tracy discussed combating a rise in shootings with FOX 2 after a violent January, with 20 homicides in 2024 compared to 11 the previous year. He highlighted the use of ShotSpotter to link shootings and emphasized efforts to fill 334 department vacancies, including offering raises to attract recruits.

Despite criticism about the department’s supervisory levels, Tracy defended his management strategy, citing his experience across various cities. He has also introduced new roles to improve efficiency.

Tracy expressed his commitment to St. Louis, planning to stay regardless of potential legislative changes to police governance, underscoring his and his family’s dedication to the city. Read more.
