Dear Reader,
MPs return to Westminster tomorrow for the first time since Andy Burnham entered 10 Downing Street. For several weeks, the new prime minister has enjoyed a “soft launch” during parliament’s summer recess. He has launched policies on rough sleeping, capping bus fares, cutting VAT on electricity bills, cutting business rates for pubs and setting up No 10 North in Manchester – all without the usual reporting to parliament and the chance for MPs to ask questions.
The new prime minister is expected to make a statement and take questions from MPs – the chamber is likely to be packed and the press gallery will be full. The statement is likely to cover all the policies launched over the summer, as well as dealing with Burnham’s visit to Kyiv last week. Kemi Badenoch, as leader of the opposition, will ask the first question, and it will be interesting to see how she handles it. She was notably gracious in her final exchanges with Keir Starmer – will she revert to her usual combative style?
