(UPI) -- Stuart Appleby shot only the fifth round of 59 in PGA Tour history Sunday and hung on for a victory at the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia. The Australian's dead-accurate, 11-foot putt on the 18th hole easily found the cup to complete his history-making round of 11-under-par 59, and he celebrated 30 minutes later in the clubhouse as Jeff Overton's attempt to overtake him at 22-under 258 fell one stroke short. Appleby's 59 was the second in 25 days on the PGA Tour. Paul Goydos shot the fourth 59 in history July 8 during in the first round of the John Deere Classic. Overton's try at a 4-foot birdie putt on the 17th lipped out and he could only manage a par on the final hole, finishing alone in second place at 21-under 259. Brendan de Jonge (65) claimed sole possession of third place at minus-17. Fourth place went to Woody Austin (63), Paul Stankowski (64) and Roger Tambellini (65), all of whom finished at minus-15. Webber took over the lead when pole-sitter Fernando Alonso of Ferrari pitted early in the 70-lap race and Vettel was later given a controversial drive-through penalty for a safety-car rule infringement. The win was the fourth of the year for Webber and enabled him to take over the points lead in the Formula One world championship with 161 to 157 for McLaren's Lewis Hamilton. Alonso ended up in second place, 17.8 seconds behind Webber, and Vettel, who argued furiously with race officials over his penalty, settled for third. Felipe Massa of Ferrari and Renault's Vitaly Petrov finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Hamilton finished in 20th place, pulling out after 23 laps with a gear-box issue. Ferrero prevailed over the Italian 6-4, 6-4, breaking his serve in the first set and never trailing thereafter. Ferrero, the tourney's No. 4 seed, didn't face a break point on his own serve throughout the 80-minute match, adding the Umag event to previous wins this year at Costa du Sauipe and Buenos Aires. The victory marked the first time since 2003 that Ferrero has won at least three titles in a season. Starace failed in his bid to notch his first ATP Tour win. He had previously reached finals in Kitzbuhel and Valencia in 2007.
