Mets owners searching for partners

NEW YORK (UPI) -- The owners of baseball's cash-starved New York Mets say a handful of "legitimate" candidates are seriously interested in buying part of the ball club.

The team has given more than a dozen names of financial groups interested in a minority stake in the club to Major League Baseball for vetting, as the league must pre-approve their qualifications before the team opens the formal bidding process, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

But the Mets believe just a few of the contenders are strong enough financially to be a potential partner, sources told the Post.

The Mets are desperately seeking a buyer for a minority interest in the team, possibly up to 49 percent, to raise much-needed cash as team owners -- including majority owner Fred Wilpon and his brother-in-law Saul Katz -- are struggling with debts stemming from investments they had in Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme.

In addition to the candidates currently being checked by MLB, the current majority owner of the Tampa Bay Rays may be interested in buying the Mets -- but not just a small piece, sources said.

Although Rays owner Stuart Sternberg, a Brooklyn native and current Mets season-ticket holder, told the Post, "The Wilpons have been great owners, and I have no interest in buying the Mets," sources say if the Wilpon family is forced to sell its majority stake in the club against its wishes then Sternberg would be interested.

Having baseball Commissioner Bud Selig as a strong ally would help Sternberg's interest but he would have to sell the Rays as a prerequisite to purchasing the Mets, the Post said.

Korie Lucious transfers to Iowa State

AMES, Iowa (UPI) -- Former Michigan State guard Korie Lucious, who was suspended from the Spartans, is transferring to Iowa State, Cyclones Coach Fred Hoiberg said Wednesday.

Michigan State Coach Tom Izzo suspended the point guard after 18 games this season for unspecified team rule violations.

"Korie is an accomplished point guard with valuable experience playing at the highest level," Hoiberg said. "He is a point guard that can run a team, make plays, and score in both transition and in the half-court."

"It's the best playing opportunity for me to get to where I eventually want to go," Lucious told The Des Moines Register. "Coach Hoiberg has connections -- a lot of connections -- to the NBA."

Lucious will have one year of college eligibility remaining after he sits out the 2011-12 season due to NCAA transferring rules.

He averaged 6.5 points and 4.1 assists this season for Michigan State and played a key role for the Spartans in last year's NCAA Final Four.

Vick signs one-year deal with Eagles

PHILADELPHIA (UPI) -- Quarterback Michael Vick, who resurrected his career after serving prison time for dogfighting, signed a one-year contract with Philadelphia Wednesday.

The Eagles had designated Vick a franchise player Feb. 15, giving them exclusive negotiating rights with him. He will receive at least $16 million for the 2011 season, the average of the Top 5 quarterback salaries in the league.

Vick was last season's Comeback Player of the Year, passing for 3,018 yards and 21 touchdowns with six interceptions for Philadelphia, which won the NFC East title.

Vick had been out of the league since 2006.

The Eagles were unable to reach a deal with kicker David Akers, who had been given the transition player tag, which required the 12-year veteran be offered a one-year deal paying the average of the 10 highest-paid kickers and punters in the NFL.

Akers was 32-for-38 in field goal tries and made all 47 PAT attempts last season. The Pro Bowl kicker is the all-time franchise leader in games played, points and field goals.

Davis named USGA executive director

FAR HILLS, N.J. (UPI) -- Mike Davis has been hired as executive director of the United States Golf Association, the organization said Wednesday.

Davis fills a vacancy created by David Fay's retirement in December after a 21-year run as executive director.

"I am humbled and extremely grateful to the United States Golf Association for the trust and confidence it has placed in me as the executive director," said Davis, who will immediately assume his new responsibilities. "I am passionate about the USGA and its mission."

Davis joined the USGA in 1990 as assistant manager of championship relations and was promoted to manager of championship relations late that year. He became director of championship relations in 1995 and two years later was promoted to U.S. Open championship director. He took over as senior director of rules and competitions in 2005.

"Mike Davis is one of the most knowledgeable and experienced administrators in the golf industry today and will be an ideal steward of the game as the USGA's new executive director," USGA President Jim Hyler said. "In two decades of organizing and managing all our national championships, Mike has demonstrated creativity and impartiality that will serve him and the organization well in his new position."

Serena Williams treated for embolism

LOS ANGELES (UPI) -- U.S. tennis star Serena Williams suffered a pulmonary embolism last week, her spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Nicole Chabot told People magazine Williams had emergency treatment Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Williams, 29, had been seen at the hospital several times over the past week.

Chabot said the blood clot in the lungs was found when Williams returned to Los Angeles from New York, where she was seeing a doctor for "ongoing issues with her foot."

"Doctors are continuing to monitor her situation closely to avoid additional complications," she added.

Williams attended the Elton John AIDS Foundation's Oscar party Sunday.

Djokovic to skip Davis Cup this week

NOVI SAD, Serbia (UPI) -- Serbia's Novak Djokovic, undefeated this year, said Wednesday he will pass on this weekend's first-round Davis Cup series against India.

Djokovic, No. 3 in the world rankings, said he was sitting out the best-of-five series in Novi Sad, Serbia.

Djokovic has appeared in two tournaments this year, winning the Australian Open and the Dubai Duty Free Championships, but said he needed time to prepare for one ATP Masters series event that starts next week in Indian Wells, Calif., and another in Miami, which is set for March 23-April 3.

"I feel physically well, fit, and mentally motivated to do even more coming up to Indian Wells and Miami where I haven't done well in the last years," Djokovic wrote on his personal Web site. "So I really want to work hard and get some good results in the U.S."

Djokovic was 3-0 in Davis Cup singles play last year, including winning two finals when Serbia claimed its first Davis Cup title with a victory over France. Djokovic is 19-6 overall in Davis Cup singles matches.

The Serbs are expected to use Viktor Troicki and Janko Tipsarevic, No. 18 and 45, respectively, in the world rankings, in their singles matches against India.
