Consumer Corner: Recycling resins

CHICAGO (UPI) -- Don't look now but that new plastic bowl in the cupboard may not be adding to oil consumption and may have kept a bunch of stuff out of a landfill.

More and more housewares manufacturers are getting interested in sustainability and are tapping Nextlife, the Florida company that takes manufacturers through the process of converting from virgin resins to recycled resins, to take tons of plastic hangars, shopping bags and strapping materials out of the waste cycle.

BofA is shedding branch offices

CHAROLOTTE, N.C. (UPI) -- Bank of America said it would close 68 more under-performing branch offices in the coming quarter, including one in its hometown of Charlotte, N.C.

BofA told investors in March the bank, known as a firm that thrives on expansion, intends to close 10 percent of its branches in the next two years. In a regulatory filing, it said it closed 43 branches in the first quarter. Bank spokeswoman Tara Burke said the number was actually 55 and explained the ...

2010 another good year for Bordeaux

BORDEAUX, France (UPI) -- Experts have declared 2010 likely to be another good year for wine from France's Bordeaux region.

If the predictions come true, that could mean two years in a row of excellent wine, Radio France Internationale reported Saturday. The years 2005 and 2009 have already been proclaimed "vintages of the century."

SEC audit shows 'litany of issues'

WASHINGTON (UPI) -- The Government Accountability Office says the corporate watchdog U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has its own bookkeeping problems.

The SEC has admitted to accounting issues in the past and for 2010 turned to the Department of Transportation to handle its bookkeeping, The Washington Post reported Friday.

But problems persisted with the GAO citing "a litany of issues" in a report released this week.
