Baltimore pleads poverty in lead damages

BALTIMORE (UPI) -- The head of Baltimore's public housing agency says millions of dollars in damages over lead poisoning cannot be paid.

Housing Commissioner Paul Graziano told The Baltimore Sun that his agency's $300 million budget is already stretched to the limit and paying off judgments in lead cases would cut into services and maintenance for other residents.

10 coal miners feared dead in China

URUMQI, China (UPI) -- Ten miners trapped underground in a coal mine in northwestern China are believed to be dead, officials said.

The miners were trapped in the Aiwei'ergou coal mine in the provincial capital of Urumqi, in China's Innjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Xinhua reported Sunday.

Officials said no signs of life were detected in the mine following 20 hours of rescue efforts. A preliminary investigation found the accident was caused by an outbreak of gas.

Boy, 3, killed in fall from roller coaster

NORRIDGE, Ill. (UPI) -- A 3-year-old boy was killed when he fell from an amusement park ride in the Illinois town of Norridge, officials said.

The boy was on the roller coaster ride called Python Pit with his twin brother at the Go Bananas amusement park Saturday evening when he managed to get under the ride's safety bar, the Chicago Tribune reported Sunday.

Four Filipino miners killed landslide

KORONADAL CITY, Philippines (UPI) -- Four Filipino miners died when a landslide resulting from heavy rainfall hit the gold mining area in which they were working, officials said.

Two other miners were rescued after the landslide hit the mine in the village of Pulabato in South Cotabato Saturday during a heavy downpour, the Philippine Daily Enquirer reported Sunday.
