The food service industry began with the contributions of ancient Romans and others. During the Middle Ages, craftspeople organized into guilds and specialized in areas like baking and winemaking.

The restaurant industry has seen steady growth for the last six years. In 2019, the industry was projected to make $863 billion in sales, which is a big increase from 1970 when it was projected to make $42.8 billion.

90% of restaurant managers start in entry-level positions.

45% of people go out to eat multiple times a week.

By 2026, more than 2.691 billion customers are expected to order food online.

Boston is also home to the oldest restaurant in the U.S: The Union Oyster House, which opened in 1826.

The word "restaurant" was first used in English in 1806. Before that the term "eating-house" was used.
